Botswana woman Lesedi Molapisi  escapes death penalty, released from Bangladesh prison

BOTSWANA woman Lesedi Molapisi has been released from prison in Bangladesh after more than four years in custody.

Molapisi was arrested in Dhaka in January 2022 and sentenced to death in May 2024 after being convicted of a drug-smuggling offence. Her case attracted widespread attention after she faced the possibility of execution.

The Botswana Government says sustained diplomatic efforts, including an appeal for clemency by President Duma Boko, contributed to her release. Bangladesh has since granted her clemency order.
