Business heavyweight Kudakwashe Tagwirei has been sworn in as a Senator, carrying his corporate and entrepreneurial background into Zimbabwe’s upper chamber and signalling an economic focus for his new political role.
Tagwirei said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s appointment caught him off guard.
“It was least expected,” he said after taking the oath.
Tagwirei said he intends to put his experience in the business sector directly into Senate debate, with economic growth and the government’s Vision 2030 agenda among his priorities. He said the legislature could play a role in reshaping the conditions in which businesses operate, including how companies are supported to grow and succeed.
“We can also assist businesses, change the way we do business, or improve the way we do business from the Senate,” Tagwirei said.
His entry into Parliament now places a prominent businessman inside the legislative chamber where economic policy and the business environment are debated, with Tagwirei signaling that he intends to use his private-sector experience as part of that conversation.
