Govt finalises driver’s licence cancellations for repeated recklessness

HARARE – Drivers who repeatedly flout road traffic regulations could lose their driving licences under a proposed Points Demerit System as authorities move to tighten enforcement and curb road carnage.
Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi says the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development is working towards implementing the system, which will penalise motorists for traffic violations and could ultimately result in the withdrawal of their driving licences.
Speaking at CID Headquarters in Harare, Commissioner Nyathi said motorists issued with traffic offence notices will have seven days to respond, followed by a further seven days to appear before the courts.
Those who fail to comply with the notices risk having warrants of arrest issued against them.
Assistant Commissioner Gomo said police officers deployed on the roads will use communication radios linked to a technical support team to track suspected traffic offenders captured by Electronic Traffic Management System cameras.
Police have also warned pedestrians against jaywalking, particularly in Harare’s Central Business District, where reckless road crossing continues to contribute to traffic congestion and expose people to danger.
Commissioner Nyathi said pedestrians must use designated crossing points, warning that existing laws against jaywalking will be enforced. He also called on the Harare City Council to support enforcement efforts to prevent traffic-related offences and loss of life.
