War Vets Demand US$2 000 Monthly Payouts, Says Zim Has Vast Mineral Resources

Zimbabwean liberation war veterans are demanding US$2,000 in monthly payouts, arguing that current allowances are far too low.

Veterans want their monthly allowance increased to US$2,000.Ex-combatants state that the country holds vast natural wealth, so the government can afford higher stipends. They point out that current payments—often around $130 to $152 per month—fail to meet basic living costs.

 Demands for a $2,000 monthly figure date back to late-1990s agreements and Statutory Instrument 280/1997, which promised pensions and lump-sum payouts after intense veteran pressure.

 Over the years, various war veteran pressure groups have repeatedly petitioned the government to revive or adjust this $2,000 benchmark to fight inflation and economic hardships.
