RBZ introduces upgraded quality notes

Business Reporter
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) will introduce a new series of ZiG banknotes on April 7, 2026.
The new notes, including ZiG50, ZiG100, and ZiG200, will coexist with current denominations like the ZiG10 and ZiG20.
Old, worn-out banknotes will be phased out through a process where banks return them to the RBZ for destruction and replacement with new notes of equal value.
RBZ Governor Dr. John Mushayavanhu emphasized that the issuance of new currency will not lead to inflation, as it will be demand-driven and not increase reserve money.
To familiarize the public, a nationwide education campaign will be launched to highlight the security features of the new banknotes. This currency update is part of a broader effort to promote economic stability and prepare for a potential future shift to a mono-currency system.
“When that money comes to the banking system, banks are expected to take the old notes and bring them to the central bank. We will destroy the old notes and give them value in new notes. So it is going to be ZiG10, ZiG20, and ZiG50. The ZiG100 and ZiG 200 notes will be introduced as and when the RBZ sees it fit,” he said.
The Governor announced that the central bank will conduct a comprehensive public education campaign between now and the 7th of April to ensure citizens are able to identify the security features on the new notes.
