Govt dismisses Kwekweza abuse claims ; says it’s mere politicking

JUSTICE Ministry’s permanent secretary, Vimbai Nyemba says abuse claims by rights activist Namatai Kwekweza are fake and steming out of mere politicking.
She made the remarks while speaking at African Union’s (AU) 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human Rights (ACHPR) being held in Gambia.
This follows a submission by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) detailing how the rights activist and two others were handled when they were arrested on their way to Victoria Falls sometime this year.
“They say Namatai, who had recently had a dental procedure, was attacked by one of the unknown individuals who shoved his shoe and metal bar into her mouth.
“One would wonder how big Namatai’s mouth is unless it is that of a crocodile,” said Nyemba .
Zimbabwe has made headlines over numerous rights abuses violations over the past years.
According to human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch the government of Zimbabwe violates the rights to shelter, food, freedom of movement and residence, freedom of assembly and the protection of the law.
There are assaults on the media, the political opposition, civil society activists, and human rights defenders.
