ZRP warns fake news peddlers as SADC Summit kicks off

By Staff Writer

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a chilling warning to peddlers of fake news on the back of the Ordinary Session of the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit.

This follows viral social media messages indicating the eruption of serious clashes between the police and some members of the public.

The high level event is being held on the back of rising tensions following arbitrary arrests of rights activists in what analysts believe to be a ploy by authorities to block uprisings in protest of the elevation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to chair the regional bloc.

To this end, about 160 activists are currently held in custody in a move widely condemned by stakeholders within and beyond the country’s borders as a breach of constitutionally guaranteed human rights.

In a statement, ZRP spokesperson ,Paul Nyathi warned fake news peddlers threatening to paint a gloomy picture.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses social media postings alleging that there has been a road traffic accident involving an escort motor bike or clash between the Police and public in Harare.

“The Police warn those using the social media platforms to send fake news that the law will take its course without fear or favour as investigations unfold,” he said.

Nyathi also informed the nation that as the 44th Ordinary Session of the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit proceeds, the situation is peaceful.

“The public should free to conduct their day to dy socio-economic activities,” he added.
