ZIMBABWE Republic Police (ZRP) has picked up 16 suspects in connection with a violent incident which resulted in one death and 17 injuries at a Citizens Coalition Change (CCC) rally in Kwekwe Sunday.
The weekend signaled a deterioration on the observance of the right to assemble after the leading opposition party failed to meet its party supporters in Gokwe on Saturday.
This was followed by the disruption of the Sunday rally in Kwekwe where rowdy thugs, suspected to be acting on instructions from the ruling Zanu-pf party attacked Chamisa’s supporters using stones , machetes and iron bars.
The incident left one person dead and 17 others injured.
A few hours later , ZRP spokesperson assistant commissioner ,Paul Nyathi issued a statement confirming the incident and the arrests.
“The ZRP confirms the violent incident which occurred in Kwekwe this afternoon in wich one person died. The ZRP also confirms that 16 suspects have been picked up in connection with the incident.
“Police investigations are now in progress and more details will be released soon. The ZRP urges citizens to be peaceful at all times ,” he said in statement.
However, sceptics remain suspicious of the arrests outcomes as they speculate that no meaningful action will be taken over the incident as it has been the case in the past.
