Mutapa Fund pulls AirZim out of the woods, revenue hits US$10,7 mln

The entry of the Mutapa Investment Fund (MIF) expert guidance has prompted a crucial turning point in Air Zimbabwe’s journey toward recovery and growth.
Placed under the Fund’s stewardship in 2023, the airline was ushered into a new era of governance and strategic direction.
This shift began with the establishment of a fully constituted, skills-based board and the appointment of experienced professionals into vital executive roles, including a Chief Finance Officer, Company Secretary, and Risk Officer.
Enhanced internal audit and risk management procedures, championed by the Fund, strengthened the culture of transparency, compliance, and accountability within the airline.
Financial discipline became a top priority. Under MIF’s watchful eye, Air Zimbabwe overcame years of reporting backlogs, successfully completing and auditing its financial statements for 2020, 2021, and 2022.
This accomplishment restored much-needed confidence among shareholders and signaled a commitment to statutory compliance and operational clarity. The financial resurgence was soon reflected in the airline’s results: revenue jumped by 42.6 percent to US$10.74 million, while net losses were contained, and shareholder equity more than doubled. Total assets also saw impressive growth, rising 32.1 percent—a testament to both asset revaluations and the ongoing financial support from MIF.
“The progress reflected in the 2024 financial statements should be viewed not as the conclusion of the turnaround journey,” Hon Joshua Sacco, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development told shareholders, “but as an important foundation upon which the next phase must be built.”
Board chairperson Dr Silvanos Gwarinda called 2024 “one of the strongest years in the Airline’s recent history.
”Revenue rose 42.6 percent, from US$7.54 million to US$10.74 million. The net loss shrank by nearly a third, from US$10.44 million to US$7.12 million, and gross losses narrowed by more than 90 percent.
One of the most significant impacts of MIF’s involvement was the renewed focus on cargo operations. Heeding the Fund’s directive to prioritize cargo as a core business, Air Zimbabwe achieved remarkable results, with cargo volumes swelling by 59.4 percent and regional cargo more than doubling. This diversification brought in new revenue streams and established cargo as a critical pillar in the airline’s turnaround efforts.
Strategic route development also benefited from MIF guidance, most notably with the restoration of direct flights between Harare and London. This move reconnected Zimbabwe to essential tourism and trade corridors and was celebrated as a milestone for the airline’s resurgence. The Mutapa Investment Fund, however, made it clear that such achievements must translate into sustainable profitability, pushing management to carefully monitor route performance, grow passenger numbers, and control costs with each new initiative.
Setting clear expectations, the Fund demanded that Air Zimbabwe convert its positive momentum—growing revenue, asset strength, and renewed visibility—into lasting financial health. The airline was tasked with strengthening the commercial viability of its route network, improving fleet reliability, expanding ancillary and cargo revenue, and ultimately reducing reliance on shareholder support.
As a result of the Mutapa Investment Fund’s oversight and insistence on robust governance, Air Zimbabwe has made tangible progress.
The carrier now boasts healthier financials, greater operational transparency, and considerable growth in cargo, even as it confronts challenges such as operating losses, low load factors, and fierce regional competition. Ultimately, MIF’s involvement has laid a strong foundation, with the aim of guiding Air Zimbabwe towards sustainable profitability, increased reliability, and restored national pride.
