By Staff Reporter

Bishop Ignatius Makumbe of the ZCC Supervisory Council hailed Mnangagwa’s commitment to retiring after his second term ends in 2028.

“The church has commended the President’s stance on upholding constitutionalism in Zimbabwe through his pledge to retire after his second five-year term, ending in 2028.

“As we celebrate our 60th milestone, we impress upon the President and the people of Zimbabwe to respect this constitutional provision and facilitate a peaceful process of selecting the President’s successor, both internally and within the party, as well as for the nation.”

The church leader emphasised the importance of adhering to constitutional rule, stating, “The church will intensify its call for constitutional rule, law, and justice.

“It will also support peaceful and democratic mechanisms for electing future presidents in all political parties and the nation,” Makumbe said.

He expressed concern over the country’s fragile political environment, citing politically motivated violence, Gukurahundi atrocities, and the failure to attain constitutional democracy.

“We will continue to call for constitutional rule, justice, and peaceful succession. Elections in Zimbabwe continuously disturb the peace and cohesion of our society. We fail as a country to tolerate political diversity.”

The top cleric reiterated the church’s commitment to promoting peaceful and democratic processes in Zimbabwe.
