Staff Writer

A 25-year-old woman who was born with a disability, committed suicide after questioning her aunt why she was different from everybody else.

Police confirmed the death by drowning, saying members of the public must take seriously the issue of psychosocial support for their relatives and loved ones living with some disability.

Recounting the incident, Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo said Edna Mubishi from Trinity Farm in Shamva recently asked her aunt Agnes why she was born different, before wailing in distress.

Agnes managed to calm her down and they retired to sleep in different bedrooms.

The following day, Agnes woke up and could not find Edna in her room and started searching for her.

She met Tabeth Chokufa who informed her that a body was found floating at Trinity Dam.

A report was made to police and Edna’s body was retrieved and sent to St Alberts Hospital for a post mortem.

People with disabilities make up around 15 percent of the global population, which is about one billion persons. This proportion is higher in developing countries, largely due to the cyclical relationship between disability and poverty.
