UZ staffers count losses after fire engulfs block of flats in Avondale

A heartless inferno has gutted a block of flats belonging to University of Zimbabwe staffers in Avondale located along Ceres Road on Tuesday morning .
The rapidly spreading blaze has triggered a massive response from local fire departments.
The fire, which broke out earlier this morning, has intensified in the last hour. Witnesses report that strong winds are fanning the flames, causing the fire to jump between units and threatening the other parts of the complex.
“The situation is extremely volatile,” said a witness .
The response team is currently evacuating of all residents and coitntaining the fire before it reaches ore adjacent buildings.
No fatalities have been officially reported at the time of writing.
Ceres Road remains cordoned off to all traffic as fire crews struggle to gain access to the more inaccessible sections of the property. Utility providers have disconnected electricity to the area as a safety precaution.
Police advised motorists to avoid the Ceres Road area and utilize alternative routes to allow for the free movement of emergency vehicles.
