HARARE — Tensions inside Zimbabwe’s ruling apparatus have escalated significantly as a senior military veteran publicly broke ranks to expose what he terms an existential struggle for institutional control within the state establishment.

In an explosive public intervention, Retired Lieutenant General Winston Sigauke Mapuranga warned that the intense political hostility directed at Vice President Constantino Chiwenga stems not from routine party factionalism, but from a deep-seated panic over accountability, institutional power, and the preservation of an emerging presidential dynasty.

Speaking from his vantage point as a veteran of the liberation struggle with decades inside the security establishment, General Sigauke stated that the word “dynasty” is now being whispered with rising urgency across the capital’s corridors of power. “What is being attempted is not succession planning,” Sigauke declared. “It is an attempt to close a door that many believe should never have been closed.”

According to Sigauke, the calculated resistance to Chiwenga—the former defense forces commander who spearheaded the 2017 political transition—goes far deeper than traditional party politics.

Addressing the recent push for structural legislative changes, party consensus, and executive extension, Sigauke dismissed official justifications as smoke and mirrors designed to mislead the public. “Dynasty-building rarely announces itself as such,” Sigauke warned.

“It arrives dressed as stability, as unity, as the avoidance of disruption. But Zimbabweans have seen this play before, and they are not as easily persuaded as some in the corridors of power seem to believe.”

Sigauke pointed to Chiwenga’s strategic restraint, public discipline, and strict adherence to constitutional procedure as the exact factors unsettling his political opponents. By maintaining composure, refusing to engage in public confrontation, and performing state duties with poise, Chiwenga continues to sharpen the contrast between constitutional order and dynastic ambition.

“When the reaction to a possibility is this disproportionate, it is worth asking what, precisely, is being protected,” Sigauke added, concluding that Zimbabwe does not need a dynasty, but the constitutional succession its people were promised.
