ZIMBABWE Republic Police has been slammed for crushing an anti-fees hike demonstration by University of Zimbabwe Students Wednesday.
The remarks come after baton wielding police officers descended on protesting students and carried out arrests.
The arrested include: Allan Chipoyi, Narshon Kohlo, Leo Mashonga, Darlingon Chingwena, Takundanashe Antonio, Takunda Chinoda, Tinotenda Mukora, Panashe C Moyo, Tatenda Kutsirai and Tanaka Masvaya who were immediately taken to the Avondale police station.
The students raised concerns that the latest fees hikes were far beyond the reach of their parents who continue to be paid salaries which are way below the cost of living yet on the other hand government proceeds to effect exorbitant fees hikes.
Commenting on the developments, Giraffe Heroes Zimbabwe, a local Non- Governmental Organisation said the arrests are disappointing.
“GHZ is appalled by the arrest of UZ students who were demonstrating against the unilateral increase of accommodation and tuition fees by the public tertiary institution. We demand the immediate release from Avondale Police Station,” they demanded.
