Epworth — The High Court has sentenced 39-year-old Charlotte Choto to 20 years in prison for murdering her partner following a domestic dispute over a meal of sadza.

Justice Catherine Bachi Mzawazi convicted Choto of murder with constructive intent in aggravating circumstances, dismissing her claims of self-defense.

The court established that the incident occurred on December 27 when the victim, Jehu Rubaba, returned home intoxicated. Finding his family eating rice and chicken, Rubaba demanded to be served sadza, triggering an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation in the couple’s bedroom.

During the altercation, Choto strangled Rubaba using the hood of his jacket. Testimony confirmed that she continued the assault even after the victim had collapsed and was no longer able to defend himself.

In sentencing, Justice Mzawazi highlighted the continued strangulation and subsequent assaults on a helpless victim as key aggravating factors. The judge noted that although Choto was a first-time offender and had expressed remorse, the extreme gravity of the offense warranted a lengthy custodial sentence.
