Grief Without Goodbye: Chivayo Family Denied Final Body Viewing, Some Heads Were Not Found At The Accident Scene

By Staff Reporter

There will be no final farewell for the late Wicknell Chivayo and his beloved wife Lucy—not even the comfort of a last glimpse—after a horrific helicopter crash left their bodies unrecognizable.

The family, already reeling from unimaginable loss, was forced to accept the cruel reality that they could not see their loved ones one last time.

Hebert Chivayo, the family’s spokesperson and uncle, spoke through tears as he described the heart-wrenching scene at Kudenga Farm near Marondera. The wreckage offered no solace, only trauma: bodies shattered, burnt beyond recognition, with even heads severed by the awful force of the crash. “When we arrived at the scene, human flesh and body parts were scattered everywhere. It was a gory scene,” he recounted, his words heavy with sorrow.

Authorities now rely on forensic and DNA testing to piece together the final traces of five lives lost—Chivayo, his wife, two pilots, and a security aide—denying families the chance to say goodbye in the way their hearts so desperately needed.

Inside the Gletwin mansion, as mourners gathered in shock and tears, President Emmerson Mnangagwa joined the grieving family. Yet, even the presence of a nation’s leader could not fill the emptiness left by the sudden, brutal end to lives once so vibrant, so full of promise and controversy.

Through the pain, a sliver of hope remained. Hebert shared Chivayo’s last wish: “Dad, if I die, ensure that my children get most of my wealth so that they will grow up to remember me.” Amid the devastation, the family vowed to honor this legacy—ensuring Chivayo’s children are the rightful heirs to everything he left behind.

No funeral arrangements have been announced, as the family tries to gather strength for the days ahead. For now, they cling to memories, robbed of the closure a final embrace could have brought—left only with the echoes of love and the weight of unspeakable loss.
