THE Government has made a U-turn on the fate of the late Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo Johannes Tomana after announcing a National Heroes Status to the diplomat Wednesday.
Tomana died aged 55 at his rural home in Honde Valley last weekend.
Information at hand indicates the former Prosecutor General had complained about stomach pain earlier.
In an earlier communiqué released by the government late Tuesday, mention of the late diplomat’s hero status was not declared amid revelations of just a State assisted funeral.
The message was immediately withdrawn after a government official urged the media to ignore the notice in what hinted on the existence of some debate on the status of the later barrister.
But in yet another update Wednesday afternoon, the government released a press statement after finally conferring the National Hero Status on the late Tomana.
“His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa today announced the conferment of National Hero Staus on the late Advocate Johannes Tomana who passed away on 6th August 2023 after a short illness.
“The recognition and honour followed the late Ambassador Tomana’s outstanding contribution to our Nation and distinguished career as a skilled legal practitioner , Deputy Attornery General and the country’s first Prosecutor General under the New Constitution from November 2013,” the statement signed by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet ,Dr Misheck Sibanda said in part.
In the statement, Mnangagwa once again extended his deepest heartfelt condolences to the Tomana family on the untimely passing on of a loving , hardeworking and caring husband , father and guardian.
