How a Wife’s Arrest Unraveled Armed Robbery Case in Harare

By Agencies
A series of armed robberies across several Harare suburbs left residents in fear as thieves stormed homes, stealing cash, electronics, and valuables worth around US$23,260.
The crime wave struck neighborhoods including Ashdown Park, Cold Comfort, Houghton Park, and Madokero between July and September.
The breakthrough for police came after they arrested Chiedza Jamombe on September 30. During interrogation, Jamombe allegedly implicated her husband, John Nhira, and another suspected accomplice, Chamunorwa Takawira. This information helped authorities recover some stolen property and led them to pursue Takawira, who was tracked down and arrested in Seke. However, Nhira remains at large.
Court documents clarified that Jamombe was not used by police to lure the suspects; instead, her testimony and arrest advanced the investigation. This approach differed from another high-profile case in Masvingo, where law enforcement used a fugitive’s wife to draw him out of hiding.
Takawira appeared in court on October 19 facing 10 counts of armed robbery. Prosecutors opposed bail, warning he might attempt to flee or tamper with witnesses. The accused gang allegedly forced entry into homes using weapons such as pistols, machetes, and iron bars, demanding money and goods while residents were present.
Although some stolen items—valued at just US$180—have been recovered, most of the property remains missing. The investigation is ongoing, with the focus now on capturing Nhira and any other accomplices suspected to be involved.
The case highlights the significant role a suspect’s arrest can play in unraveling complex investigations and underscores how critical timely police work is in the fight against organized crime.
