Vulnerable Households to Benefit from Masvingo Hailstorm Relief

By Agencies
Masvingoโ A total of 6,711 vulnerable households severely impacted by the recent destructive hailstorm in Masvingo are set to receive food aid, emergency relief supplies, and specialized psychosocial support as recovery interventions gather momentum across the province.
The disaster response prioritizes the most at-risk population segments, with direct aid targeted at the elderly, persons with disabilities, child-headed households, children, and the chronically ill.
Following severe weather that damaged thousands of residential homes, schools, health institutions, and public infrastructure across Masvingo, the governmentโworking alongside cooperating partners and faith-based organizationsโhas initiated multi-sectoral relief distributions to address immediate humanitarian needs.
Under the national relief mechanism, emergency consignments including 90 tonnes of mealie-meal and 90 tonnes of rice have been dispatched to ensure food security for affected families. In addition to essential food staples, partner agencies are delivering non-food items, temporary shelter materials, and emergency household goods to cushion households whose properties were unroofed or destroyed during the storm.
Recognizing the deep emotional and psychological impact of the disaster on affected communities, the government has deployed 40 social workers to the province. Operating in close collaboration with faith-based organizations and community relief networks, the social workers are providing critical trauma counseling and psychosocial support, particularly to children and vulnerable individuals who experienced displacement or loss during the violent weather event.
Parallel to humanitarian relief efforts, state agencies and utility providers are working to restore key infrastructure. Power supply has been re-established at critical health centers, including Masvingo Provincial Hospital, while rehabilitation is underway for damaged educational facilities, solar power setups, and telecommunications networks. Authorities have also appealed to building material suppliers to maintain fair market pricing to facilitate swift home repairs across the province.
As field teams continue damage assessments, officials emphasize that emergency assistance will be coordinated through established structures to ensure transparent, equitable distribution and reach those most in need.
