In a major courtroom breakthrough at the High Court today, 22-year-old Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika was granted US$5,000 bail, bringing an end to her prolonged detention.
She is being represented by a defense team comprising legal practitioners Admire Rubaya and Everson Chatambudza of Rubaya and Chatambudza Legal Practitioners, alongside Tiriwamambo Kangai of Venturas and Samukange Legal Practitioners.
The High Court decision overturns an earlier ruling by Harare Regional Magistrate Francis Mapfumo, who had denied her bail on the grounds that she was a flight risk owing to her alleged financial liquidity.
The legal proceedings stem from her initial arrest on August 4, 2026, when detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit raided her Greystone Park home and charged her with unlawful possession of pethidine, morphine, and unregistered medicines.
Although she secured US$1,000 bail at the High Court on August 20 regarding the drug charges, she was immediately re-arrested on fresh allegations of money laundering. State prosecutors accused her of acquiring 22 luxury properties and vehicles valued at over US$9.3 million using illicit drug proceeds.
Her legal team successfully challenged the state’s stance before the High Court, dismantling claims of flight risk and maintaining that the assets in question were lawful matrimonial acquisitions.
