Mwonzora vows to defend MDC-T presidency

By Staff Reporter
MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora has strongly criticized some party leaders, accusing them of attempting to take his position.
His comments follow a High Court ruling that declared the December 2022 MDC congress invalid due to constitutional violations, including insufficient notice and an incomplete women’s congress.
Mwonzora is challenging this ruling, which he believes is politically motivated, aimed at undermining the party’s opposition to President Mnangagwa’s potential third-term bid. He emphasized that the court’s decision means the leaders elected at the 2022 congress are not legitimate, as the congress was deemed invalid.
Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters in Harare, Mwonzora announced that the MDC would revert to a pre-congress leadership structure, in line with the High Court judgment. He stressed that leadership in the party must come through democratic elections, and anyone attempting to take power undemocratically would not be tolerated.
Mwonzora reiterated the MDC’s commitment to peaceful, democratic governance and improving the lives of Zimbabweans. He also criticized those who supported the court ruling, stating that anyone who gained their position through the 2022 congress would no longer hold that position. The dispute has caused divisions within the party, with some youths claiming to have seized control of the party headquarters and Mwonzora’s deputy, Elias Mudzuri, also asserting leadership.
