127 die in festive season road traffic accidents

A total 127 people lost their lives in road traffic accidents during the 2022/3 festive season holiday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) data has revealed.

The period saw 1 998 accidents being recorded countrywide with the number of fatal accidents standing at 95.

Another 489 people were injured with private cars dominating the accidents list.

“Police reiterates that drivers need to self-introspect and reconsider the way some are driving on the country’s roads. The buly and unruly driving conduct being shown by some driver4s should stop in order to save lives on the roads.

“In one of the fatal road traffic accidents which occurred on the 18th of December 2022 at 1945 hrs at the 300km peg along Bulawayo –Victoria Falls Road, a motorist who was driving a Toyota Hilux vehicle with three passengers on board lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road to the left , where he ran over seven pedestrians before swerving to the right side where he rammed into a stationary Honda Fit vehicle which had six passengers on board.

“As a result, three people two pedestrians and one passenger from the Honda Fit vehicle died  while 13 others were injured.

“Similarly, on 31st December 2022 at 1000hrs, three pedestrians were killed after they were hit by a bus which veered off the road along Zaka-Nyika road,” said ZRP in a statement.

The ZRP implored motorists to be responsible and strive to promote road safety on the country’s roads.
