Zim plunged into mourning as 17 people die in Seke Road accident

By Staff Reporter
Seventeen people died in a harrowing accident along Seke Road at Hunyani Bridge, after a 30-tonne haulage truck collided head-on with a commuter omnibus, on Tuesday morning
Three others were critically injured and rushed to hospital.
Eyewitnesses say the kombi, which was headed towards central Harare, was struck when the haulage truck swerved into the opposite lane, allegedly trying to avoid a Honda Fit that had veered into its path.
The truck collided head-on with the fully loaded kombi, crushing it beneath its massive frame. When emergency services arrived, the wreckage was so severe that only fragments of the kombi’s chassis were visible.
Rescue crews worked for hours to retrieve bodies from the mangled wreck, with twisted metal and debris scattered across the highway.
Police have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The identities of the victims are still being verified, as distraught family members began arriving at the scene.
The Seke Road tragedy adds to a growing list of deadly road accidents in Zimbabwe in 2025.
In February, 24 people died in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge.
In March, seven people were killed and eight injured at the Dzivarasekwa junction in another multi-vehicle crash.
May saw two more fatal incidents: five people died when a Hungwe Bus crashed in Gweru, while another five were killed on the Mvurwi–Kanyemba Road when a truck veered off a steep descent.
Just two days ago, three members of a traditional dance group perished in a crash along the Gweru–Bulawayo highway.
