Zim govt goes after ‘Gold Mafia’ documentary boastful name droppers

GOVERNMENT has vowed to leave no stone unturned in holding to account all personalities who were exposed in the Gold Mafia documentary should ongoing investigations prove that they have a case to answer.
The expose released by AL Jazeera has so far released two episodes bringing to the fore serious allegations of abuse of diplomatic immunity, illicit gold trading corruption and money laundering in the financial sector.
The developments come shortly after a leaked memo from the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) indicated that the FIU launched investigations into Prophet Uebert Angel and Ewan Macmillan in a bid to ascertain the assets they own as well as the duo’s recent transactions.
Last week a source in the FIU told NewZimbabwe.com that the probe nets had been cast much wider and now includes all personalities who participated in the documentary in a bid to establish whether they have participated in money laundering at any given time.
Speaking to the media Tuesday, Information, Media and Publicity Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said heads are set to roll.
“Government takes note of a documentary titled “Gold Mafia” currently being serialized by an international broadcasting channel which purports to expose a network of alleged money laundering and gold smuggling in Zimbabwe.
Government takes the allegations rose in the documentary seriously and has directed relevant organs to institute investigations into the issues raised therein. Any person found to have engaged in acts of corruption, fraud or any form of crime, will face the full wrath of the law,” she said.
She reaffirmed the opportunity and commitment to upholding local and international laws, including laws relating to financial transactions, the trade of gold and other precious minerals.
“Boastful behavior and name-dropping by some personalities featured in the documentary, seeking personal gain and glory, should never be taken as an enunciation of government policy.
“Government remains seized with the matter and the nation will be kept apprised of any new developments,” added Mutsvangwa.
