Zim braces for heavy rains

By Staff Reporter

Zimbabwe is facing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and flash flooding from January 20 to 24, 2026, as issued by the Meteorological Services Department and the Department of Civil Protection.

The country is expected to receive over 50 millimeters of rain in some areas, leading to hazardous conditions like floods, landslides, and dangerous roads. The alert also warns of fallen trees, roof damage, and lightning strikes.

This weather event follows a pattern of extreme flooding in Southern Africa, where countries like South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe have seen hundreds of deaths and widespread damage due to torrential rains. Mozambique has been the hardest-hit, with at least 103 people killed and more than 200,000 affected. In Zimbabwe, 74 fatalities have been reported, along with over US$107,000 worth of property damage since the beginning of the rainy season.

In addition, there is concern about the potential for tropical cyclones this season, with forecasts predicting normal to above-normal rainfall and cyclone activity in the region. This has raised flood risks, especially along major rivers and in flood-prone areas.

The government has urged the public to take precautions, such as securing homes and livestock, avoiding outdoor activities during storms, and staying informed about weather updates. The season is expected to continue to be active, and authorities have recommended that Zimbabwe prioritize disaster planning to safeguard communities, crops, livestock, and infrastructure.
