Watch: Gokwe scores firsts in Zim demos ahead of SADC summit
By Staff Reporter
ACTIVISTS who claim to be from the Midlands town of Gokwe Thursday broke the ice by becoming firsts in staging demonstrations ahead of the SADC 44th Summit.
In the video, the activists are heard challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy and pleading with SADC not to legitimise the questionable 2023 polls outcome.
The Sadc Heads of State and Government Summit is slated for August 17 and 18 while the 7th Sadc Industrialisation Week was officially opened by President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week.
To date, over 150 activists are languishing behind bars following arrests on charges suspected to be a ploy by authorities to clamp down on dissent ahead of the Summit.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi recently warned errant elements against daring to cause chaos and destabilise the nation.
“It is not correct to say that police have deployed because of the Southern African Development Community summit. We have been doing normal deployments and for Harare these are normal deployments,” Nyathi said.
