Vice President Kembo Mohadi has commended NetOne Cellular for its contribution to community development through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), following the telecommunications company’s funding of renovation works at Mtetengwe Primary School.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Saturday, VP Mohadi said the refurbished facilities were a testament to collaborative efforts to improve education infrastructure in vulnerable communities.
“Education is the bedrock of our nation’s development, and the renovations we inaugurate today are evidence of our shared commitment to providing our children with the best possible learning environment,” he said.
The school, which serves over 500 pupils from seven surrounding villages, suffered damage during Cyclone Idai. The Office of the Vice President subsequently engaged private partners, including NetOne, to assist in restoring the institution.
As part of the project, classrooms were refurbished, and one was transformed into a computer lab equipped with modern computers, WiFi via Starlink, interactive whiteboards, and projectors. A solar-powered borehole and a one-hectare nutritional garden have also been established to support food security and sustainability at the school.
In support of the digital literacy policy and Heritage-Based Education 5.0, the upgrades are aimed at fostering both academic and practical skills development.
VP Mohadi expressed hope that similar partnerships would be replicated in other communities across the country. “You have demonstrated that corporate entities can play a pivotal role in nation-building,” he said. “May you also do the same for other communities throughout the country, with the mantra ‘leaving no one and no place behind’.”
As part of the proceedings, VP Mohadi and Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri each planted a tree in the school’s new garden. Their trees were symbolically named ‘KCD’ and ‘Oppah’ respectively.
The event also included a “Run for Life” marathon in recognition of VP Mohadi’s role in national development. He later awarded medals to the winners, including participants with disabilities, and disbursed revolving empowerment funds to several community groups: Crossborders 4ED (US$20,000), Pastors4ED (US$10,000), Hairdressers 4ED (US$10,000), and children of war veterans (US$50,000).
Minister Muchinguri praised the initiative as aligning with the government’s Vision 2030 development agenda, and credited VP Mohadi for driving infrastructure development at the grassroots level.
