SADC threatens its acronyms abusers

By Staff Reporter

SADC Secretariat wishes to inform the public that the name “Southern African Development Community”, the acronym “SADC”, and the SADC logo are registered and legally protected trademarks of the Southern African Development Community.

Any unauthorized use of these trademarks constitutes an infringement of SADC’s intellectual property rights and may result in appropriate legal action.

“The Secretariat further emphasizes that the mere fact of operating within the Southern African region does not confer any right upon an organization or entity to adopt the name “SADC” or to utilise the SADC brand, identity, or associated trademarks in any form.

“Members of the public, institutions, and organisations are therefore strongly urged to refrain from the unauthorized use of these protected marks, which are strictly reserved for official SADC programs, activities, and events,” the regional bloc said.

The name “Southern African Development Community” and the acronym “SADC” are not copyrighted, but they are registered and protected trademarks owned by the SADC Secretariat.

The full name, the acronym “SADC,” and the official SADC logo are all legally protected
