Tourism and Hospitality Minister Barbara Rwodzi has pledged to improve the NRZ luxury train service, hitting back at social media critics who dismissed the initiative as outdated. Rwodzi emphasized that the government’s efforts to enhance the country’s tourism offerings should be celebrated, not ridiculed.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe’s (NRZ) luxury train made waves on social media last week, with some critics describing it as a revival of old-fashioned luxury. However, the train successfully completed its inaugural journey on Sunday, arriving at Mutare Station at 5:10 p.m., just a day after the first 30-minute Air Zimbabwe flight from Harare landed at Grand Reef Airport in Mutare.
This milestone marks a significant step in preparations for the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, which kicks off this Wednesday.
Addressing the critics in her speech, Minister Rwodzi urged patience and confidence in the development of Zimbabwe’s tourism infrastructure. “Let no one be swayed by comparisons to luxury trains in Western countries that have imposed illegal sanctions on us,” she stated. “We are building this, brick by brick, and I assure you, we are on the path to creating a world-class leisure train. Soon, it will feature leather seats and every modern comfort you can imagine, and we will prove our critics wrong.”
She also shared that there has been a noticeable surge in last-minute bookings from exhibitors who had initially been hesitant to take part in the upcoming Expo.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, represented by Deputy Minister Sacco, welcomed the train as an exciting new opportunity for travelers. “This is not just about transportation; it’s about offering people a chance to experience the golden era of train travel, all while enjoying the stunning landscapes of Zimbabwe. The train journey will set the tone for the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Expo. It’s also a huge boost for Manicaland, complementing the recent resumption of Air Zimbabwe flights into Mutare.”
Mutare City Town Clerk, Blessing Chafesuka, who boarded the train at Headlands in Nyazura, described the trip as “an unforgettable experience,” highlighting the comfort and scenic beauty of the journey.
