Riot police besiege UZ ahead of fees demo

ZIMBABWE Republic Police (ZRP) officers from the anti-riots section have been deployed to the University of Zimbabwe ahead of an anti-fees hikes demonstration ensuing at the country’s oldest learning institution.
Sources at the UZ said the institution has moved to increase fees for this semester with sciences degree fees now pegged at around $55 000.
“Said one student in tweet protest, “UZ fees for this semester is set at $55,000 . The combined salaries of my parents, who are both civil servants, is not enough to cover that.
“I have a twin sister and a younger one in Form 2. How can I be neutral? Politics will bite us one way or the other. THIS IS NOT NORMAL,” he said.
Students at the institution are mulling a demonstration over the recent decision by government to effect such exorbitant fees hikes.
The presence of the police details at the institution have therefore prompted suspicion that the move is aimed to thwart demonstrations.
