The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Chiredzi West Constituency Member of Parliament, Darlington Chiwa, on allegations of stealing Constituency Development Funds (CDF) after allegedly diverting money meant for community projects into his personal accounts.
In a statement confirming the arrest, ZACC said: “The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission confirms the arrest of Chiredzi West Constituency Member of Parliament, Darlington Chiwa on allegations of theft after he allegedly diverted the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).”
Chiwa, who also serves as chairperson of the Chiredzi West CDF committee, is accused of unlawfully taking full control of the constituency’s bank account by sidelining other community representatives.
According to ZACC, “Chiwa, who is also the Chairperson of the Chiredzi West CDF, is the sole signatory to the Constituency bank account after he allegedly manipulated other community members to rescind their responsibilities over the account.”
Investigations have established that in April 2025, the Parliament of Zimbabwe disbursed ZWG$1 332 430 (approximately US$50 000) into the Chiredzi West constituency account.
ZACC said, “The Parliament of Zimbabwe transferred ZWG$1 332 430.00 (USD50 000.00) to the Chiredzi West constituency account, and the accused transferred the funds into his personal accounts.”
The anti-graft body alleges that the bulk of the funds were used for personal benefit. “Chiwa reportedly used funds amounting to ZWG$993 241.00 to buy building materials, groceries, shoes, and beer for himself,” ZACC said, adding that “only ZWG$270 427.00 was channelled towards constituency projects.”
Furthermore, ZACC stated that the MP attempted to conceal the alleged theft by submitting false records to Parliament. “The MP then submitted fraudulent acquittal documents to Parliament, falsely claiming the full amount had been used for school developments,” the statement reads.
