Mambo Munhumutapa’s office   hails ZLHR

By Staff Reporter

A member of staff purportedly representing the nabbed Mambo Munhumutapa has hailed the legal representation offered by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Thursday.

In a statement Thursday the office of Mambo Munhumutapa officially informed members of the public on the arrest and ensuing legal proceedings.

The embattled chief appeared before Magistrate Sheunesu Matova at the Harare Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody and will return for trial on January 7, 2025.

He is facing allegations of undermining the office of the president by appointing chiefs.

The Prosecutor and the Investigating officers told the court that they suspected Mambo was mentally unstable and this guided the court to  invoked Section 26 of the Mental Health Act which stipulates that Mambo will need to be examined by two doctors provided for by the state.

“Our lawyer, Advocate Gift Mtisi from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, did an outstanding job, and we are grateful for his efforts. He eloquently opposed the court’s doubts about Mambo’s mental state, stating that Mambo showed no signs of mental instability.

“Advocate Mtisi even suggested that Mambo be placed in the witness box to demonstrate his sound mind. However, Magistrate Matova stood with recommendations of the Prosecution and committed the king to remand prison,” the office said.

The office also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Advocate Gift Mtisi for his unwavering dedication and professional representation during this challenging time.

“His commitment to ensuring justice and fair treatment has been invaluable. We also thank all those who have stood by the chief. The office of Mambo Munhumutapa urges the public to remain calm and vigilant during this period. The legal process is underway, and further updates will be provided as necessary,” said the office.
