In a momentous event that symbolizes progress, resilience, and commitment to entrepreneurship, the Sustainable and Resilient Enterprises (SURE) Training Programme was officially launched in Bulawayo District. This initiative, aimed at nurturing the potential of growth-oriented enterprises, is set to transform the economic landscape of the region.
The programme is the result of a collaborative effort involving six Business Development Services (BDS) providers: Virl Financial Services, Junior Achievement Zimbabwe, Dial Honour, Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association, Bulawayo Chambers of SMEs, and Bulawayo City Council. These organizations were meticulously trained by the International Labour Organization (ILO) under the Business Growth for Young Entrepreneurs (BG4YE) project, generously funded by the African Development Bank.

In addition to the Mayor, the Provincial Head in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, underscored the government’s commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He praised the collaboration between the ILO and the BDS providers, highlighting the importance of empowering women and youth entrepreneurs in the region.
Role of the ILO and mandate
The International Labour Organization (ILO) played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of this training programme. As a specialized agency of the United Nations, the ILO is dedicated to promoting social justice and decent work for all. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the ILO’s mandate and objectives, particularly in the areas of promoting sustainable economic growth and fostering entrepreneurship.
The ILO’s technical support ensures that the training programme is of the highest quality, adhering to international best practices and standards. The ILO’s commitment to inclusive growth and decent work is evident in the program’s comprehensive approach, which not only focuses on business growth but also on sustainability, resilience, and responsible entrepreneurship.
