Harare summons Glen View 7 land developer as floods persist

By Staff Reporter

HARARE City Council (HCC) has summoned a developer for a section of land in Glen View 7 in the wake of incessant floods affecting the community.

In one of the  viral  videos, a steel gate is seen collapsed due to the powerful rains currently hitting the country.

Following the reports with many social media users blaming the City of Harare, a team of experts and senior officials was dispatched to assess the situation and come up with immediate solutions.

Disaster management Committee Chairperson Cllr Jane Bingari also took part in the assessment tour.

The team established that contrary to the lies being peddled on social media platforms, the area is not under the City of Harare and is an irregular settlement.

The developer named the settlement, Glen View Extension.

The land belongs to a private developer who without any council involvement, developed the stands and sold to individuals. The developer did this without the necessary consultations and approvals from the City of Harare.

The houses are built on wetlands. There is no proper approved plans, no drainage systems and sewer connections were done illegally.

There is no Environmental Impact Assessment plan in place.

As such, the City of Harare will immediately summon the developer and contractor to come up with a solution on the drainage system in the area to avert loss of lives due to flooding.

Once again we appeal to the public to desist from spreading false and alarming information without proper clarifications.
