Harare Residents ‘defy’ Garwe’s night vending ban

THE Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) has urged Minister Daniel Garwe to reconsider the recent ban on night vending.
The remarks come on the back of a directive issued by Garwe banning all activities related to night vending in the CBD as a matter of urgency, sending chills down the spines of thousand s of traders who earn a living from buying and selling.
In a statement, CHRA said Garwe’s position is a clear reflection of the failure of the implementation of devolution within the local authority, the decision was made from an autocratic position.
“The City of Harare has to run operations within the city in accordance with Section 264 of the, the procedure should done in accordance with the Constitution. The informal sector has for years .
“We are worried over the continued attack on livelihoods as the economy of Zimbabwe is highly informal and residents fully depend on vending .We reiterate that the economy has compromised the informal traders in the city,” said CHRA.
The residents grouping said the situation has been further worsened by the unavailability of proper vending spaces in the CBD.
Said CHRA , “The ban is a serious area of concern which must not be underplayed and requires thorough investigation which include addressing the fundamental factors which push people to be informal businesses operators and analysis on the implication of livelihoods.”
