Harare City Council water pumping choked by power shortages

THE Harare City Council (HCC) says water pumping at Morton Jaffray has been choked by the incessant power outages which have rocked the nation.
Due to critical water shortages at Kariba Power Station, the nation is experiencing up to 20 hours long power shortages.
In a statement Friday, the HCC advised residents that current water shortages are being triggered by power outages.
“Residents are advised that there was a massive reduction in water supplies to all areas yesterday 19 December 2024 and today 20 December 2024 due to a fault caused by power outages at Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Works.
“The pump station experienced severe water pumping problems following a series of power failures yesterday,”he said .
The following are a series of events as recorded:
A) At 0415hrs on the 19th of December both Morton Jaffray and Warren Control pump station experienced power failure resulting in the plant isolation and shutdown.
B) At approximately 0830hrs power was restored and Morton Jaffray started preparation to reintroduce production.
C) At around 1100hrs pumping resumed into the old 1300mm to Warren Control line.
At around 1140hrs we experienced another power failure resulting in the rupture of the scour pipe at chamber within Morton Jaffray Treatment Works.
The rupture led to flooding of pumps but we are working round the clock to resolve the situation. We expect to restore pumping of water this evening as engineers are working on repairing the damage.
