Fact Check: A/Harare Chamber Secretary Warren Chiwawa was not arrested
By Staff Reporter
THE Harare City Council Acting Chamber Secretary Warren Chiwawa was not arrested, our publication has established.
This follows media reports suggesting the top official was picked up at Town House Tuesday just before the 1 929th Ordinary Council meeting which started at 12pm noon.
The news report alleged Chiwawa was wanted in connection with seven cases of fraud and presented the matter as a developing story hinting he was likely to spend the night behind the dock.
But contrary to the claims, Chiwawa attended the last part of the Ordinary Council meeting.
The Mayor of Harare, Adv Jacob Mafume welcomed him and did not mention anything to do with arrest.
“Oh, the Chamber Secretary is back from the meeting he had gone to attend somewhere,” said Mayor Jacob Mafume.
A highly placed source at Town House who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on the matter dismissed earlier speculation, instead insisting the A/Chamber Secretary was summoned to submit some documents.
“The secretary was taken just before the Council meeting. They wanted him to submit some pertinent documents in line with work in progress,” he said.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa last in May 2024 appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate the City of Harare’s management and council since 2017.
Since the coming on board of the Commission, speculation on the next steps has been very rife.
The commission of inquiry is set to investigate financial management systems, audit compliance with the Public Finance Management Act and management of revenue generated through special vehicle companies and other outsourced arrangements.
To confirm that the reports were false, the publications which ran the speculative articles immediately pulled them down.
