A job offer letter which has gone viral on social media has left many readers with broken jaws after alleging the University of Zimbabwe’s (UZ) offer of US$5, 70 per hour to a new part time lecturer.
The University Of Zimbabwe (UZ) is grappling with a deep crisis precipitated by a month-long strike by lecturers, which has resulted in academic stagnation. The lecturers are on indefinite strike demanding a salary of US$2500, but they are currently earning US$230 per month and a ZiG component of less than US$200 when converted.
A viral offer letter addressed to a prospective job seeker revealed a meager hourly payment, far lesser that what some gardeners in low density suburbs are earning.
“You will be paid based on the following pay structure: 60% of the total hours will be paid at a rate of US$3,30 per hour and the remaining 40% at a rate of US$2,20 per hour payable in ZWG equivalence .Please note that this rate is inclusive of all teaching related duties, including preparation , assignment setting and marking, as well as the setting and marking of examination scripts,” says the letter signed by one A.Matsika, the Administration Officer.
The remuneration for your services to the University will be subject to income tax. If you are willing to accept this appointment on the above terms. “I will be grateful if you will signify your appointment and dating the second copy of this letter and returning it to me,” the letter added.
