ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has welcomed a peace initiative presented by Sudan’s Transitional Government to the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a comprehensive framework that addresses the country’s deepening political, security and humanitarian crisis.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Youssouf said the proposal demonstrates a clear understanding of the challenges facing Sudan and reflects a genuine commitment to ending hostilities, protecting civilians and preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He said the African Union places significant importance on the political, humanitarian and security pillars outlined in the initiative, viewing them as a credible basis for sustainable peace.
Constructive engagement with the proposal, he added, is essential to restoring security and stability and to safeguarding Sudan’s social cohesion.
Youssouf expressed strong support for the initiative’s call for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access and protection of civilians.
He also highlighted provisions addressing the needs of refugees and internally displaced people, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction.
“These elements are critical for rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric and consolidating a unified Sudanese state,” he said.
The AU commission chairperson emphasized the need for an inclusive political process grounded in transitional justice, accountability and redress for victims, alongside broad-based political participation.
Such an approach, he said, is vital to preventing renewed violence or national fragmentation.
Reaffirming the African Union’s long-standing position, Youssouf stressed that Sudan’s transition must be led by Sudanese actors through inclusive dialogue aimed at reaching consensus on governance within a single constitutional framework.
He also underscored the importance of holding free, fair and internationally supervised elections to meet the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democracy and lasting stability.
Youssouf said the African Union stands ready to work closely with the United Nations, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and other international partners to support peace efforts in Sudan, reiterating the AU’s commitment to regional and international peace and security.
