Our army is professional, recognise Mnangagwa’s reforms – Zanu-PF to EU

By Staff Writer

THE ruling Zanu-PF party has castigated the European Union (EU) over the recent renewal of sanctions against the country arguing they contradict the key reforms on the ground.

This follows the decision by the Western bloc to renew economic sanctions against Zimbabwe in February 2024 among other conditions maintaining an arms embargo on the Zimbabwe National Army fearing that such weapons may be used to silence citizens dissent.

Relations between Harare and Brussles have worsened after reaching a new low shortly after the August 2024 polls which were condemned by the Western Bloc as largely flawed.

However,Harare dismissed the observations and accused the EU of gross interference with domestic processes.

The EU went to the extent of withdrawing funding support extended to the Zimbvabwe Elections Commission (ZEC) signalling escalated deterioration of relations between the duo.

Zanu-PF director of Information and Publicity Cde Farai Marapira said the EU’S decision to renew sanctions is a stumbling block to the creation of a prosperous country.

“As Zanu-PF we are disappointed but not surprised to learn about the EU’s decision to extend the arms embargo on Zimbabwe. This decision further undermines our efforts to build a prosperous nation. We remain committed to peace , stability and good governance.

“The EU must recognise our comprehensive reforms and engage constructively. These reforms implemented under the able leadership of His Excellency,President ED Mnangagwa are undeniably palpable,” he said.

He said the country’s security forces adherence to human rights laws over the past few years was remarkable.

“Zimbabwe’s security forces have championed professionalism and adherence to human rights. It is time to restore trust, foster dialogue and lift these outdated restrictions.President Mnangagwa has clearly stated thatv Zimbabwe stands ready to work with the EU and demonstrate commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Zimbabwe,” added Marapira
