Health Commission integrity questionned after ‘compromised’ appointments

Staff Writer
PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa Friday moved to appoint a seven member Health Services Commission which will be tasked to play a part in transforming the country’s health system.
The latest appointments have raised questions from highly placed sources in the health sector over the independence of the commission following the appointment of compromised officials who have held top government positions before.
The new board will be chaired by Doctor Vincent Hungwe who is set to be deputised by Doctor Abel Kangwende.
Commissioners will include Brigadier General Rtd Gen Gerald Gwinji, Doctor Edward Makondo, Mr Engelbert Mbengwa, Mrs Josephine Mwakutuya and Mrs Sibongile Gwaunza.
The new commission replaces the Health Services Board premised on the principle of independence attainment.
The new Health Services Act which established the commission is meant to designate the health service as an essential service in line with Section 65(3) of the Constitution and will substitute the Health Services Board with the Health Services Commission
