I Got Paid My Million Bucks :Shocked Mapfumo Says After Paymaster’s Sudden Death

By Arts Reporter

Shockwaves rippled through Harare’s music scene as legendary Chimurenga musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo revealed he was paid in full—reportedly US$1 million—for two shows arranged by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

But the plot thickens: just as the city buzzed in anticipation, Jah Prayzah’s wedding was suddenly postponed. The reason? Chivayo’s mysterious death in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.

Mukanya, still reeling from the shocking news, confirmed the payment and insisted he would honor the lucrative deal.

“I have received the full amount and will keep my commitment,” he declared, while admitting he was at a loss for words over Chivayo’s abrupt demise.

He sent condolences to Chivayo’s family, but cryptically added that only after the burials would “the full picture” emerge.

Mukanya plans to return to America, but with the show now shrouded in uncertainty, his team is urgently working behind the scenes to renegotiate with all parties involved.

Publicist Cuthbert Chiromo echoed Mukanya’s statement, confirming ongoing talks with Jah Prayzah’s management for new dates. “Mukanya was paid in full,” Chiromo stressed, promising the performances will go on—once the dust settles.

In a city awash with rumors and unanswered questions, one thing is clear: the show—and the story—are far from over.
