A Nation Mourns: Thomas Mapfumo Grieves the Heartbreaking Loss of Wicknell Chivayo and Loved Ones in Tragic Helicopter Crash

THE nation is reeling with grief after a devastating helicopter crash on Wednesday claimed the lives of Wicknell Chivayo, his beloved wife Lucy Muteke, and three others—Senelisiwe Magagula, Kelvin Soda, and Courage Mutavirwo.
What should have been a week of celebration has instead become a time of mourning that has left families, friends, and an entire country heartbroken.
For legendary Chimurenga musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo, the tragedy struck especially close to home. Mapfumo, who had returned to Zimbabwe for a long-awaited homecoming after years abroad, had come not only to reconnect with his roots but also to honor special invitations: performing at Jah Prayzah’s wedding and celebrating Chivayo’s birthday.
Instead, he is now offering condolences, his voice heavy with sorrow, to families shattered by the unimaginable loss.
In his statement, Mapfumo poured out his sympathies:
“May God give the Chivayo family strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time. May the souls of Wicknell, Lucy, and all those who perished rest in eternal peace.”
His words echo the pain so many feel—a pain compounded by dreams unfulfilled and reunions cut short. Mapfumo’s scheduled performances, once anticipated as joyful milestones, are now postponed indefinitely. Jah Prayzah’s wedding, meant to unite and uplift, has been put on hold as loved ones grapple with the shock.
The sorrow is made even more poignant by the circumstances of Mapfumo’s return. Flown in under a generous arrangement by the late Chivayo—who pledged US$1 million for two private performances—Mapfumo was welcomed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by dignitaries and music industry giants in what was meant to be a triumphant return. That celebration has been silenced by grief.
As the country mourns, Mapfumo’s commitment to honoring his promises stands as a quiet tribute to those lost. Yet, in these days of heartbreak, it is the memory of those who perished—and the lives they touched—that lingers most powerfully in every note of sorrow and every moment of silence.
