Bulawayo residents are expected to throng the city centre today for the Bulawayo Day parade and carnival as the city celebrates its rich history, culture and community spirit.

Bulawayo Day commemorates June 1, 1894, the date on which Bulawayo was officially declared a town. The city later attained municipal status in 1897 before being granted city status in 1943.

The celebrations, which honours the city’s historic development in different fronts, will kick off with a carnival parade starting at the Large City Hall Car Park at 10am.

The parade will wind through key sections of the central business district, passing some of Bulawayo’s prominent heritage landmarks, including Highlanders Club House, Inxwala cite and the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Statue, amongst others.

Bulawayo Mayor Councillor David Coltart, councillors, cultural groups, Ibutho and residents from across the city are expected to take part in the colourful procession.

The celebrations are aimed at promoting Bulawayo’s heritage, cultural diversity and artistic identity while bringing together residents from different communities.
After the parade, members of the public will be treated to a variety of entertainment activities, including music, poetry and dance performances at the Large City Hall Car Park.

The City of Bulawayo has encouraged residents to participate in the festivities and celebrate the city’s legacy through the carnival walk and entertainment showcase.
Organisers have described this year’s celebrations as a platform to honour Bulawayo’s past while strengthening community ties and civic pride among residents.
