One dies, two left injured in railway tracks accidents – NRZ

THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has expressed alarm over the frequency of accidents on the railway lines.

In particular, the NRZ said three people were hit by trains in separate incidents yesterday alone, resulting in one death and two serious injuries.

“In the first incident, an identified man died on the spot after being hit by a train in Matabeleland South. He was sleeping across the railway tracks on the Stanmore- Gwanda block when the train approached and did not respond to the sound of the horn.

“His body was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary, our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones at this difficult time,” the NRZ said.

In another incident, NRZ said a man sustained a cut on the back after being hit by a train between Passaford and Tatagura in Mashonaland Central.

He was taken to Concession Hospital.

“In Harare, a man lost both legs after being run over by a shunt train. He was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

“The NRZ wishes the injured men speedy recovery. We urge the public not to sleep or walk on railway tracks to prevent such incidents,” the NRZ added.
