New US envoy expects to meet Chamisa

NEWLY appointed US Ambassador to Zimbabwe says she is looking forward to meet opposition leader Nelson Chamisa and other political actors in the country.
The top envoy, Pamela Tremont made the remarks Thursday during her inaugural media briefing shortly after presenting her credential to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
This was after the media questioned why the top envoy was seemingly working to build relations with the government despite an outcry that the previous elections were flawed and rigged.
“What is your message to Adv Nelson Chamisa,” the journalist demanded.
In response, Tremont said she had no message for top opposition leader but expressed interest in meeting him.
“Yes. I don’t have a message for Mister Chamisa. If I do, I’ll make sure I call him and talk to him. No. I look forward to meeting him and all of the political actors in Zimbabwe. Again, that’s part of a diplomat’s job is to get to know as many people and get to understand as many different perspectives as possible.
“You know, we had some real problems with the elections here. So did SADC, so did the EU. Unfortunately, we were not able to verify the elections ourselves because our election observers activities were impeded.
“So we cannot testify one way or the other. So we do have concerns about the way the elections were run. But in the meantime, I look forward to working with all the political parties to get to understand their viewpoints and see how they, interact with each other,” she said
