Mwonzora brews another ‘joke’; threatens 3K men demo over electoral reforms

IN yet another dramatic twist, MDC leader Douglas Mwonzora has brewed another shocker, this time claiming to be organising a demonstration over electoral reforms.
The opposition leader who is currently rated as the country’s most unpopular leader made headlines after being declared the legitimate leader of the opposition party MDC-T , outwitting rival contestant, Nelson Chamisa who has since formed another impactful party.
Mwonzora then proceeded to recall several MPs and Councillors .
Over the years MDC has been the main beneficiary of funding extended to the Main Opposition political party under the Political Finance Act.
Despite this, Mwonzorora has fared dismally in the previous by- elections held last year, in most instances failing to garner a single vote at several polling stations.
Early this week, Mwonzora announced that he was pulling out of the Presidential race , a decision declined by the Zimbabwe Elections Commission which said such a decision can onle be taken 21 days before polls.
In a recent development, Mwonzora’s party Thursday flexed muscles this time applying for permission to stage a demonstration.
A letter dated August 9 2023 signed by the MDC-T National Organising Secretary, Benevolence Taisekwa addressed to The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Regulating Officer, Harare Central Police Station begs for permission to stage a demonstration.
“We hereby notify you that on the 17th of August 2023, the Movement for Democratic Change intends to hold a peaceful demonstration .The purpose of the demonstration is the demand for electoral reforms in Zimbabwe.
“We are expecting about 3 000 people to attend .Our route will be starting at Robert Migabe Square down Rotten Row up to 4th Street, then Robert Mugabe Road westwards then back.We will have about 50 ushers to help maintain order,” the letter said.
The theme of the event will be ,”No to Disenfranchisement”.
