Cholera ravages Zim, 22 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours

CHOLERA continues to ravage Zimbabwe with 22 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The disease’s prevalence has been steadily rising in recent weeks but latest indications on the ground shows that the disease seems to be spreading faster.

An update from the Health Ministry Monday shows that a significant number of people are contracting the disease amid fears that it could grip the nation at an alarming pace if authorities do not expeditiously contain further spread.

“There were 22 new suspected cholera cases, 1 suspected death and 14 laboratory confirmed results were reported today (21/05/23).

“The suspected cases were reported from Bindura (1), Mazowe (3),Zvimba (1), Chegutu (1), Mhondoro -Ngezi (1), Beitbridge (5),Buhera (3),Mutasa (1), Makoni (2),Mutare Rural (3), and Chimanimani (1),” the update said.

 As of 19 May 2023, 149 cases are hospitalized. These are admitted at: Chipinge (2),Mutasa (6),Mutare City (11),Mutare Rural (17), Chimanimani (16), Nyanga (1) in Manicaland Province, Zvimba (12), Chegutu (6), Mhondoro -Ngezi (10) in Mashonaland West, Beitbridge (5) Hospital CTC in Matabeleland South Province, Mwenezi (6), Gutu (1) in Masvingo Province, and BRIDH (45) in Harare Province, Mazowe (3), Bindura (5) in Mashonaland Central, and Binga (2), Fairbridge (1) in Matabeleland North.

 Tests done: 261 RDT done, 105 RDT positive (39.7 % positivity) and Culture 574 culture done, 348 culture positive (48.7 % positivity).

• 9 New recoveries: National Recovery Rate is at 92 % & cases in-care 149.

• As of today, Zimbabwe has recorded 1 285 suspected cholera cases, 348 confirmed cases, 1 101 recoveries, 9 Confirmed deaths and 26 suspected deaths.

Lack of access to clean water sources has further complicated the situation in a development which has seen a large proportion of the nation relying on unhealthy sources.
