THE ruling Zanu-PF party has hinted VP Constantino Chiwenga’s succession matter is not on the forthcoming conference’s agenda.
The delegates list has also been cut down to just 4 396 in line with global best practices.
Speculation had pointed to the possibility of an explosive conference which would ordain the second in charge as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s successor following the latter’s announcement that he is not running for presidency when his term ends in 2028.
But speaking to the state controlled weekly , Zanu-PF’s secretary for Administration, Dr Orbert Mpofu said economic issues will instead dominate the conference’s agenda.
He said the draft programme for the conference is being finalised .It will be availed soon and will focus on the state of the economy, the party and the welfare of the people,
“The conference offers the opportuity for the party to deliberate on key issues affecting our people .Thus , the conference will likely come up with resolutions aimed at ensururing that the needs of our people within every sector are met.The ruling party will ensure that the government fully implements these resolutions for the benefit of our people,” he said.
Mpofu said he is expecting a total of of 4 396 party delegates to attend the conference
“This is in line with the President and First Secretary’s vision to have fewer delegates to come with more meaningful deliberations.
“We are taking the approach of having leaner delegates to allow for more fruitful deliberations.Leaner delegations are the international gold standard as most conferences of this nature by similar political parties tend to have not more than 3 000 delegates. This will allow for a ore focused conference and enable people to attend to more pressing issues,” he said.
