THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has suspended the corruption accused director general Taguma Mahonde.
The suspension is with effect from September 29 2023.
“The ZIMSTAT Board would like to inform stakeholders of the suspension of Mr Taguma Mahonde from the position of Director General with effect from 29 September 2023.
“In the interim ,the Board has appointed Mrs Matowonesa Phiri Director Production Statistics , as the Acting Director General pending finalization of criminal proceedings initiated against Mr Mahonde in the Magistrates Court,” the statistics agency said in a statement.
Mahonde was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) over allegations of gross corruption and corporate malpractices last week.
He has hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons after he reportedly secured a service car, a Toyota Land Cruiser valued at US$28,000 for just US$300 after just three years of service.
Recently, Mahonde was also gifted a luxury Land Rover Discovery which was bought in 2021 leading to him owning two vehicles in five years against principles of good governance.
He also enjoyed lavish benefits whose funds he failed to produce invoices for, as per standard practice in good governance.
Investigations unearthed that Mahonde received school fees allowances in US dollars despite ZimStat employees earning their wages in the local currency.
